Before You Land
A few practical setup details students usually sort before arrival
Connectivity, insurance, and secure public WiFi are the boring things you only notice when you need them. Keep them on your checklist, but keep the guide itself front and centre.
Arrival Connectivity
Sort an eSIM before you land
Maps, ride apps, 2FA codes, and WhatsApp are usually the first things students need from the airport.
Coverage Check
Confirm your travel insurance
Even when the university gives guidance, students usually need to double-check what is covered before departure.
Public WiFi
Have a backup for shared networks
Campus halls, airports, and cafés are convenient, but many students prefer an extra privacy layer when they first arrive.
Exchange Basics
Requirements
Partner nomination, UCL online application, academic transcript, learning agreement, English proof, and UK Student visa (non-UK/EU).
Nomination Process
Your home international office nominates you directly to UCL Study Abroad office by the published deadline. UCL sends a conditional offer then a formal acceptance after complete application is received.
Visa Support
Non-UK students need UK Student visa (Tier 4). UCL issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) needed for the visa — allow 8–12 weeks for UK visa processing. EU students no longer have automatic right of entry and may need a visa depending on stay length.
Buddy System
UCL Student Union Buddy Scheme pairs incoming exchange students with UCL student volunteers. UCL also runs Welcome Week social events for international students.
Orientation Week
UCL Welcome Week runs the week before teaching starts — includes department inductions, campus tours, library registration, and student union events. Attendance highly recommended.
