Before You Land
A few practical setup details students usually sort before arrival
Connectivity, insurance, and secure public WiFi are the boring things you only notice when you need them. Keep them on your checklist, but keep the guide itself front and centre.
Arrival Connectivity
Sort an eSIM before you land
Maps, ride apps, 2FA codes, and WhatsApp are usually the first things students need from the airport.
Coverage Check
Confirm your travel insurance
Even when the university gives guidance, students usually need to double-check what is covered before departure.
Public WiFi
Have a backup for shared networks
Campus halls, airports, and cafés are convenient, but many students prefer an extra privacy layer when they first arrive.

Credit System
Waseda credit system. Most lecture courses are worth 2 credits (representing 90 hours of total workload: 30 hours of lectures + 60 hours of self-study). International students on a college student visa must register for at least 10 hours of class time per week (usually equivalent to 7 courses or 14 credits per semester).
Grading System
A letter grading system is used: A+ (90-100%, Excellent), A (80-89%, Good), B (70-79%, Pass), C (60-69%, Pass), F (Below 60%, Fail). Some courses may use S/A/B/C/F. GPA is calculated on a 4.0 scale (A+ = 4, A = 3, B = 2, C = 1, F = 0).
Exam Culture
Class attendance is strictly monitored and heavily weighted in final evaluations (typically 10-30%). Assessments include final examinations in late July (Spring) and late January (Fall), essays, and presentations.
