Erasmus guide Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
Courses, housing, visa, campus life and exchange basics for studying at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Snapshot
A campus-based Amsterdam exchange option with strong business, psychology, sciences, health, and social-science routes, plus easier daily structure than scattered central campuses.
Why students shortlist it
An Amsterdam research university with a compact Zuidas campus and strengths in social sciences, business, economics, law, health, computer science, earth sciences, and life sciences. It is practical for students who prefer a clearer campus base.
Teaching languages: English (primary for most exchange and master's courses); Dutch for some bachelor programmes
Before You Land
A few practical setup details students usually sort before arrival
Connectivity, insurance, and secure public WiFi are the boring things you only notice when you need them. Keep them on your checklist, but keep the guide itself front and centre.
Arrival Connectivity
Sort an eSIM before you land
Maps, ride apps, 2FA codes, and WhatsApp are usually the first things students need from the airport.
Coverage Check
Confirm your travel insurance
Even when the university gives guidance, students usually need to double-check what is covered before departure.
Public WiFi
Have a backup for shared networks
Campus halls, airports, and cafés are convenient, but many students prefer an extra privacy layer when they first arrive.
Exchange Basics
Requirements
Partner nomination, VU online application, transcript, passport or ID, course selection, English proof if required, and early accommodation application where eligible.

Visa Support
EU/EEA students do not need a visa. Non-EU students must apply for a Netherlands MVV entry visa and residence permit; the host university initiates the IND procedure after acceptance.
