Requirements

Good academic standing (typically GPA 3.0+ or equivalent). Proof of English proficiency (TOEFL 90 / IELTS 6.5) for English-taught classes, or Mandarin proficiency (typically HSK 4-5) for Chinese-taught classes.

Arrival Checklist

Course Registration

Exchange students typically enroll in 15-20 credits per semester. Course selection is done online but expect bureaucratic delays.

Credit System

Chinese credit system (not ECTS). Your home university will need to convert. Typical ratio: 1 Chinese credit ≈ 1.5-2 ECTS.

Grading System

Standard percentage-based grading scale (0-100) or letter grade system: A (90-100, Excellent), B (80-89, Good), C (70-79, Fair), D (60-69, Pass), F (<60, Fail).

Exam Culture

Tsinghua is engineering-rigorous with strict attendance (80%+ enforced via fingerprint or QR codes) and high-stakes final exams worth 50–70% of grades. Mid-term tests, problem sets, lab reports, and group projects make up the rest. Computer science and engineering modules add intensive lab work and project defences. Class participation graded in international programmes. Mid-term and final exam weeks are intense — locals genuinely lock in for revision.
