Before You Land
A few practical setup details students usually sort before arrival
Connectivity, insurance, and secure public WiFi are the boring things you only notice when you need them. Keep them on your checklist, but keep the guide itself front and centre.
Arrival Connectivity
Sort an eSIM before you land
Maps, ride apps, 2FA codes, and WhatsApp are usually the first things students need from the airport.
Coverage Check
Confirm your travel insurance
Even when the university gives guidance, students usually need to double-check what is covered before departure.
Public WiFi
Have a backup for shared networks
Campus halls, airports, and cafés are convenient, but many students prefer an extra privacy layer when they first arrive.
Exchange Basics
Requirements
Partner nomination, NUS SEP application, academic transcript, learning agreement, English proof if applicable, and Singapore Student Pass application.
Nomination Process
Your home international office nominates you to the NUS International Relations Office. After nomination is verified, NUS sends direct application instructions to the student.
Visa Support
Exchange students need a Singapore Student Pass (student visa). NUS provides In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter needed for the application — apply through ICA (Immigration and Checkpoints Authority) after receiving IPA. Allow 4–8 weeks.
Buddy System
NUS Ambassadors for Students (AMS) Peer Advising Link (PAL) and the NUS International Student Committee run buddy matching and social activities for exchange students.
Orientation Week
NUS International Student Orientation (ISO) runs before semester start — registration, housing check-in, campus orientation, and social events. Attendance strongly recommended.
| Semester | Nomination | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 (Aug–Nov) | March 31 | April 30 |
| Semester 2 (Jan–May) | September 30 | October 31 |
Arrival Checklist

Academics
Course Registration
Module registration via NUS CORS/ModReg system after admission. Submit module preferences early — popular modules fill quickly, especially in Computing and Business. Build a backup list.
Credit System
NUS uses Modular Credits (MCs). 1 MC ≈ 2.5 ECTS. Full semester = 20 MCs = 50 ECTS equivalent. Check with home university for exact conversion.
Grading System
NUS uses letter grades on 5-point scale: A+ (5.0), A (5.0), A- (4.5), B+ (4.0), B (3.5), B- (3.0), C+ (2.5), C (2.0), D+ (1.5), D (1.0), F (0). Grade conversion table available from IRO.
Exam Culture
End-of-semester exams plus continuous assessment throughout semester. NUS has a bell curve grading culture — participate actively in class and labs. Final exams are serious.
