Before You Land

A few practical setup details students usually sort before arrival

Connectivity, insurance, and secure public WiFi are the boring things you only notice when you need them. Keep them on your checklist, but keep the guide itself front and centre.

Arrival Connectivity

Sort an eSIM before you land

Maps, ride apps, 2FA codes, and WhatsApp are usually the first things students need from the airport.

Exchange Basics

Requirements

Partner nomination, Minerva online application, official transcripts, course pre-approval, English proof if applicable, and Canadian study permit if required.

Nomination Process

Your home international office nominates you to McGill Study Abroad by the published deadline. McGill then sends a personal invitation to complete the online Minerva application.

Visa Support

Students from most countries need a Canadian Study Permit for exchanges over 6 months. Under 6 months, some nationalities can enter visa-free. McGill provides the admission letter needed for the permit application — apply through IRCC at least 8 weeks before arrival.

Buddy System

McGill International Student Network (ISN) and faculty-level buddy programmes pair exchange students with McGill students before and during arrival week.

Orientation Week

McGill International Student Orientation runs before the academic year — registration, campus tour, health services, social events. Highly recommended for first-week admin.

  • Open a Canadian bank account (Scotiabank, TD, or RBC offer student accounts) — needed for rent.
  • Learn some French basics — Montréal service culture is often in French even though McGill is English.

Academics

Course requests submitted via Minerva at application stage; final registration after admission. Course availability not guaranteed — submit alternatives. Faculty-specific restrictions apply (Law, Medicine, Management).

McGill uses its own credit system. 1 full-time semester = ~15 McGill credits. ECTS conversion table provided — approximately 1 McGill credit = 2 ECTS.
